Antwerp has a long and impressive history as a critical protected port from the always dangerous Atlantic Ocean. It is the second busiest port in Europe. Naturally protected deep water ports flourished in the 15th and 16th century as ships grew larger as trade with the West Indies began to flourish. Uniworld will be offering a number of tours of the city, which will include the UNESCO-designated Cathedral of Our Lady. Started in 1352, this massive structure was finished in a brief 170 years in 1521. It is worth visiting. Along with all the historic architecture in Antwerp, there are 1500 diamond dealers and jewelers in Antwerp awaiting your orders and of course offering every other precious gem you can imagine. 85 percent of the world’s diamonds come through this city. There’s plenty of other shopping available and did we previously mention Chocolate?

Follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps and stroll through Nuenen, where the artist once lived and painted “The Potato Eaters.” The artist regarded “The Potato Eaters” as “…after all the best thing I did.” Van Gogh produced 25% of all his works in the two years he lived in Nuenen where he mostly painted weavers, peasants in the fields and the surrounding areas. The town of Nuenen is seen by many art historians as an outdoor museum with 23 buildings and locations in the countryside that have a direct link with Van Gogh’s work and story.

Our final full day will be spent in the Netherlands’ largest city, Amsterdam. This is TULIP DAY! If you love tulips and wish to see millions of tulips, (175,000 per acre) this day is your day. Part of the day of the tulip can never be spent better than at the famous Keukenhof Gardens. The Keukenhof Gardens is a 70-acre park planted with millions of tulips (7 million) and hundreds of thousands of other spring flowers. This brilliant park is simply an extraordinary sight in the spring. The park is a short 35 minute drive from our ship but we will request a route that maybe a bit longer but travels through the square miles of rainbowed tulip fields. Be ready to be dazzled. For those who have seen enough tulips in their lives, there will be tours of Amsterdam and an Amsterdam canal cruise. Amsterdam has been an international port and financial center for 400 years, it has a lively cosmopolitan feeling to match its historic architecture. It is a great walking city and is well worth a long stroll.
